Description

Active Vallecas (Vallecas Activa) takes place in Entrevías (one of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Madrid), situated in the district Puente de Vallecas.  Active Vallecas is a community and interdisciplinary intervention project, with the joint participation of all the professional categories of the primary healthcare sector with professionals of Sports Science, Education and Social Services. This coordination of different public institutions and professional sectors allows offering a quality improvement of public services to give the most adequate response to citizens’ needs.

The programme currently integrates five projects, each in different levels of development:

  1. Health pilot project
  2. Education pilot project
  3. Social Inclusion pilot project
  4. Employment and training pilot project
  5. Professional motivation pilot project

Results and impact

Vallecas Activa Project is an example of user`s empowerment and participation. Due to the preoccupation with the continuity of the programme for 2015-2016, users have organized themselves and have collected more than 3,500 signatures to ask for its continuity to the different institutions and platforms.

The evaluations imply that Vallecas Activa experience is easily transferrable and could benefit a high number of potential beneficiaries. Vallecas Activa is an example that it is possible to change reality and make public resources more efficient in terms of fighting diseases associated with sedentary life. Currently the “know how” of Vallecas Activa project is being transferred to other districts of Madrid.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition, which reports to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, has recognized the impact of Vallecas Activa project, and as a result the Health Ministry of the Community of Madrid and the City of Madrid have been awarded with the first runner-up "Strategy Naos 2014" for the promotion of physical activity in the community.
