Description

Activities within this festival aim to promote active and healthy lifestyles in the fight against inactivity and fostering social cohesion. The neighbourhood community festivals of the 13th District of Budapest are one day long festivals that each year take place at 8 locations within the city green areas in the district. The festival offers various free sports, recreational and cultural programs (sport competitions, music and theatre, dance programs, craft workshops, free medical checks). The festival’s popularity increased after district’s departments for sport and culture were merged into one united division in January 2016. The participation is monitored through questionnaires for each festival, fulfilled by random respondents. In 2015 the budget of the annual program was 10.400 EUR, provided by the Municipality.

Results and impact

The program has been running for 3 years and is very popular with the residents. The festival aims to promote culture and healthy life style, provide high quality recreations programs for local residents and to enhance the feeling of local identity, local pride. The target group is every resident of the district (120,000 people). On average, there are 400–500 participants at each neighborhood festival.

This program is the first example where areas of sport and culture work close together organizing a joint public event. The benefit of the joint program is that people engage with both – cultural and sport activities. Within that the quality of citizens’ life is improved as well as the function and beautifying of green spaces.
